Mónica Pretelini is the late and first wife of the former President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto. Mónica Pretelini died post-epileptic attack due to respiratory arrest on 11 January 2007.

Peña Nieto is a Mexican politician who served as the 57th President of Mexico from 2012 to 2018. The couple met for the first time at the restaurant El Mesón del Caballo Bayo in Mexico City. He was at that time working as the treasurer of the Financing Committee of the State Steering Committee of the PRI in the campaign of Mr. Emilio Chuayffet Chemor. Mónica Pretelini was then serving as the president of the Association of Settlers of Tecamachalco.
It was love at first sight for both of them. They began dating and after a courtship lasting 8 months, the couple married on 12 February 1994 in the church of Santa Teresita situated in Lomas de Chapultepec. The after-wedding reception was held at Hotel Nikko.
The family settled first in Toluca and later shifted to Metepec. The couple had three children together-Paulina, Alejandro and Nicole. They were together until the death of Mónica on 11 January 2007.

Recalling the sequence of events leading to the death of Mónica, Peña who was at home at that time said:
“I spoke with her when she went from the DF to the government house (Wednesday, January 10, 2007); As soon as I arrived, I went up to our room, went into the bathroom, prepared the next day’s clothes and when I approached the bed, Monica was in complete respiratory arrest.”
“She was transferred to the ABC Hospital in Santa Fe, where Dr. Paul Shkurovich confirmed that there was no longer any hope.”
According to him, he went crazy and asked for help. The emergency service people arrived and she was shifted to a hospital where the doctors managed to revive her but her CT scan brain revealed that she was brain dead at the age of 45 years.
Post-Mónica Pretelini death and Peña’s confessions
After the death of Mónica, Peña confessed in 2012 that he had cheated on his wife and had two more children who were born out of wedlock. There was a son whose baby mama was Maritza Díaz Hernández and another child who died as an infant was born with his relationship with an undisclosed woman.
On the other hand, friends and family of Mónica claimed that she was a woman of character and had assisted and supported her husband and his political career till the last. She had played a major supporting role during the campaign for Peña Nieto’s governorship.
After her death, Peña started a relationship with the soap opera actress of Televisa Angélica Rivera whom he married on 27 November 2010. Angélica Rivera was earlier married to producer José Alberto Castro who is the brother of Verónica Castro. They married on 11 December 1994 and the couple has three daughters namely Angélica Sofía (born 1996), Fernanda (born 1999), and Regina (born 2005). They divorced in 2008.
